atletico madrid vs club brugge: i’m still riding btts after that 3-3 chaos

Article cover

…so after that 3-3 in Belgium, I’m not overthinking it. Simeone’s Atletico can still absolutely go into “manage the game” mode, but the numbers we’ve got here scream goals at both ends again.

What stands out first: Atletico have 0% clean sheets in the competition data I’m looking at, and BTTS is sitting at 89% overall. Even more blunt, both teams scored in Atletico’s first four home Champions League games. That’s basically my whole handicap. Atleti at home should create plenty (Julian Alvarez already has 5 Champions League goals, and he’s also on 2 assists), but they’re conceding too. ESPN has them on 18 goals against in the competition, and Tipstrike shows 17 scored, 15 conceded across 8 matches. That’s not “classic” Atletico.

Club Brugge aren’t coming here to park the bus either. They’ve got 15 scored and 17 conceded in their 8 games in the same dataset, and their Champions League goal profile is wild: 92% over 2.5. Away form in Europe is the obvious worry (they’ve lost three of their four away Champions League games), but even in losses they can nick one, especially with creators like Vanaken (3 assists) and Forbs (3 assists).

Here’s my issue with the straight Atletico win: they’re short, and Brugge have already proven they can hurt them. Atletico’s last six matches average 4.17 total goals with 83% landing over 2.5, and Brugge’s last six are also 83% over 2.5. I’m expecting another open game once the first goal goes in.

Team news matters too. Atletico are still without Pablo Barrios and Nico Gonzalez. Brugge lose Onyedika to suspension, and he had a goal and an assist in the first leg, so that’s a real hit. Still, I’m not sure it’s enough to kill their chance of scoring once.

I’m taking BTTS and living with it.

My pick

Both Teams to Score - Yes (odds 1.55 - 1.70), confidence: high.

Also consider

  • Over 2.5 Goals (odds 1.38 - 1.55), confidence: medium
  • Atletico Madrid to Win & Both Teams to Score (odds 2.55 - 2.85), confidence: medium
  • Over 3.5 Goals (odds 1.95 - 2.10), confidence: low

Key stats

  • First leg: Club Brugge 3-3 Atletico Madrid
  • Atletico BTTS in Champions League: 89% overall, 100% at home (and 0% clean sheets)
  • Atletico’s first four home UCL games all saw both teams score
  • Club Brugge UCL: 92% of matches over 2.5 goals; they’ve lost 3 of 4 away UCL games
  • Atletico last 6 matches: 4.17 average total goals, 83% over 2.5

Form guide

Atletico Madrid: L D W W W (scoring a lot lately, but still giving up goals in Europe)

Club Brugge: W W L L D (results mixed, but their UCL games have been open)

Injuries and suspensions

Atletico are missing Pablo Barrios and Nico Gonzalez. Club Brugge have Raphael Onyedika suspended after a yellow in the first leg, and he contributed a goal and an assist in that 3-3, so their midfield balance takes a hit.

Bottom line

I’m backing both teams to score again. Atletico at home should win the tie, but I don’t trust them to keep Brugge out.
